The Spider Week

Our children were very enthusistic about the topic of the project . Consequently ,they took part in many different activities such as :writing poems about the spider ,drawing and painting spin webs and even creating simple sentences and singing songs about it.Thus ,they found more about certain creatures belonging to nature and exhibited a positive behaviour towards environment.

SPIDERWEEK

“Hello! I am a Portuguese Spider and you… who are you?”

We prepared our Spider Week with a lot of excitement and expectation, always keeping in mind what Sam taught us back in Sweden. Stories, booklets, online information, songs and many different resources helped us making real an activity which surprised everyone.
It was really funny to realize the idea each child had of a spider: ugly, black and furry, with an endless number of paws, poisonous and with teeth (the shark kind!) were the most popular characteristics. Besides, all spiders should be foot crushed.
These ideas changed when all the children could really look at spiders, touch them, and talk about their importance in nature, the reason for their existence and the beauty of their webs. Well, each child opened a door to a wonderful mysterious world, in which they let themselves be enchanted and surprised.
The different kinds of work children have done are the result of what they have learnt and of how fascinated they were by the activities. On the days following the “Spider Week”, all the drawings and the stories had a spider even if the task had a different theme.
Concerning the parents’ opinions, we think that in the beginning they must have thought “These teachers are not the same since they have gone to Sweden! They are completely crazy!”
We have this suspicion that most of the parents must have been obliged to do a “Spider Day”, something like a “Family Spider Day”!!!
P.S.: The melody that can be listened to during the presentation of our video is about an elephant that got stuck on a spider web!

“Olá! Eu sou a Aranha e tu… quem és?”

After returning home we announced that the kindergarten will organize a Spider Day. We exchanged experience with our colleagues how to study spiders in the nature.
All the groups started preparation for the Spider Day. Parents were involved as well, we offered them to produce spiders from the secondary raw materials, plasticine, wire, clay, buttons, etc., to find information on spiders in the Internet, books, encyclopedia, magazines and study it. The parents were very active and produced different spiders. We have even arranged an creative exhibition Spiders Revive in Autumn.
We had interviews on spiders in the groups. Children drew spiders in gouache, watercolors, chalk, pencils, cut, made appliqués, created out of plasticine and other natural materials.
Children searched for spiders in the kindergarten territory and nearby the lake Rekyva. They watched and studied the spiders.
This work was extremely interesting for children so it extended to the whole Spider week.
The teacher of art produced a spider. An idea to take the spider home and create a story, fairytale or poem has arrived. After all stories were collected and a book Spiders Journey to Children was created.
The gala event of the Spider Week was performance Spider Marriage. The most creative parents were awarded for participation at the exhibition Spiders Revive in Autumn.

Spiderweek 2008

We went out in the forest and looked for nets and spiders. We picked some spiders, and looked at the in a magnifier. How many legs have a spider? Where are they situated? The children first draw how they fought a spider looked like, and after they had looked at the spiders they draw a new spider.

The children told us that the net’s are food catcher’s. The fly gets stocked in the net and then the spider will come and sucks its blood!

One girl said that the spider have four legs at each side. It will be eight together .
