"Taste Buds"

Our gastronomically rich experiences in the countries we have already visited were as enchanting and full of discovery as our cultural experiences in Romania, Lithuania, Slovenia and Sweden.
I truly believe that a significant portion of our Comenius Project also involves being with our “taste buds”.

And that feels so good!

The "Heart of Serra da Estrela" in Onesti, romania

Under the banner of “Nature our Friend” Comenius Project, the Pre-school Teachers Maria João costa, Liseta Nunes and São Direito and Sandra Santos, the English Teacher, were honourable representatives and great spokeswomen of Manteigas and “Serra da Estrela” during the week spent in Onesti, Romania.
As always, the Comenius week promotes each country’s traditions, food and know-how, in activities which show the singing, dancing and other skills developed throughout the year! Well, one evening the “gangs” gathered around a table and experienced a “Gastronomically Rich Tour” which allowed them to travel through tastes and smells from different countries. Swedish cookies, jam, sausage and drinks; Lithuanian chocolate, cheese and vegetables and Portuguese “gourmet products”, kindly offered by “Casa das Penhas Douradas” were the perfect excuse to spend a nice happy evening among friends. Slovenian, Swedish, Lithuanian, Romanian and Portuguese girls all had the chance of tasting some of the Portuguese products which travelled in Maria’s big big bag! What a delicious experiment we had with honey, almond, chestnut, fig and other delicacies!
All these delicatessen are just a glimpse of what all our Friends can taste in Portugal in May 2010! In this little European place, the grey cold granite contrasts with the warm hospitality of Manteigas people.
We leave a big “thank you” note to Dr. João Tomás,Dra.Isabel and his assistants at Casa das Penhas Douradas!

A WEEK IN ROMANIA

The week we had in Romania was like all the other Comenius weeks we had had before – wonderful and unforgettable! From Bucharest to Onesti, from the city to the mountains, from the contact with teachers and the children to the flavours we tasted, we enjoyed all we were given the opportunity to live and experience.
We think Romania is a very beautiful country, with a wide variety of landscapes which we are glad we had the chance to visit. The confusion of Bucharest is quite different from the quietness of Onesti, but each has delighted us with its nice places and monuments. And what to say about the mountains painted white for our delight?! Amazing!
We were also pleased with the time we spent in the kindergartens. In Onesti we got the proof that more than the built spaces, the important things are the strength and the will of all those teachers, assistants and staff who do a great work with the children showing them a way to grow up and leading them through their learning process. And we believe those children will become honoured adults and will be able to help Romania become a richer country.
We are thankful for the kindness of the teachers and all staff at the kindergartens and the way they took us in and let us mess up their routines. We thank Tatiana for having done such a great work to provide all necessary conditions for us to have a good stay, we thank her and the teachers for opening the doors of the kindergartens and other schools and letting all happen; we thank the staff for providing food and drink and all we needed to have a nice day; we thank the translators for all their patience and dedication to us throughout the week.
We always come home with the feeling of taking part in a great project, a project which allows us to make friends in so many different places. When the departure time comes, we all share the same sadness and the idea that we wanted the week to go on an on. After one more week, all we can say to our Comenius Friends we leave behind is that we feel richer and happy at the same time because we took them home with us in our hearts.

A TREE PARTY

Hello everybody!

Dear Friends, we haven’t planted our tree yet. The weather in Portugal is still too hot! Autumn has already started but we keep having summer temperatures ( 27/30 degree)and there has been no rain so far! We must wait a little longer to plant our tree and then we will let you all know we have done it, OK?
But, we took advantage of good weather and went to the countryside to discover the trees of our land (vine, chestnut tree, olive tree, apple tree ).

A big day with a party tree !

We send lots of hugs and kisses to the children and their teachers!

Tree planting in Sweden!

Our tree planting day!!

On Wednesday the 9th of September we had our Tree planting day. First we gathered all together in the Preschool garden and sang songs about trees. After that we dug two big holes in the lawn there we would like to have our trees. We had bought one apple tree that is called “Ingrid Marie” that is an old kind of Swedish apple tree. The other tree we planted was a Silver willow. The willow tree is very typical for Skania, our part of Sweden.
We gave the trees A LOT OF WATER and some new good soil.
After that we ate grilled sausages and ice cream out on the lawn!!

HELLO LILLE LILLE FRIENDS!!!

I am from PORTUGAL and I am very happy that you have sent messages! =)

I am one of the teachers in the photo. Can you guess who?!

“The secret of a good memory is attention, and attention to a subject depends upon our interest in it. We rarely forget that which has made a deep impression on our minds.”

THERE WOULD BE NO LIFE WITHOUT WATER-Slovenia

Our main goal of the Water week was to teach children how important the water is for all the Earth's inhabitants. Children of all ages made different experiments (floating, tasting, mixing...).We have learned some facts from the books, made posters which we hung outside our rooms so that even parents could learn something about water. We realized that flowers without water don't survive.

That is also true for humans. There is a lot of water in our bodies and it is important that we drink a lot. We filled the plastic bottles with water (60-70% water in each bottle) and made a new friend, this way children saw how much water our bodies contain.

All water is not good for us, with the help of experiments we have seen that we cannot remove all dirt from the water even with the expensive cleaning machines, that is why we need to be careful with how much water we use in our kindergarten and at home also. If the water disapears we will disapear too.

SAVE TODAY,TO HAVE TOMORROW - MANTEIGAS( PORTUGAL)

Manteigas the capital of water

“Success” is the right word to describe the “Water week” at Manteigas kindergarten.
It was a time for discovering and learning, a time for thinking and habit changing (very bad habits, in fact).
Under the slogan “save today so that we can still have it tomorrow”, children and adults have committed themselves to make an effort and change their attitude towards the use they make of water.
Of all the experiments done, the most remarkable and the one which has made all of us rethink our consumer habits was the experience entitled “Let’s check how much water do I use in my bath!”
To perform the experiment we have selected adults and children who either have a shower or an immersion bath. They were supposed to collect the water they used in a plastic demijohn (flagon). In the end, we compared the results and verified that Ricardo, a four year old child, was the one who had used more water. He had used 6 flagons of water (= 35 litres = 125 glasses) to take a bath.
“A day without water in our school” was also an important experiment to find strategies to save water. The water children and teachers used to wash their hands was collected and reused to flush down the toilet. On the kindergarten playground there is a big tin to collect rain water which is used to water the plants and wash the floor. Small gestures can really make a difference!!!
Along with these experiments, children have made some leaflets on basic rules to save water. The leaflets will be addressed to all Manteigas inhabitants who will get them when they get the monthly water bill.
In Portugal, Manteigas is known as the water capital, but resources are not eternal, so we have to speak out loud: “save today so that we can still have it tomorrow!”

Thanks to all the mamas and dads who collaborated in these experiments.

Water in Kristianstad

We made experiments with and without water. Our children have discussed whether water is an important part of life and why it is. We have planted seeds and watched them grow and not grow. Why is there a difference?

What is nature?

In the past we asked our children in the kindergarten a relatively simple question: What is nature (to you)? We hadn't disscused anything about the nature before that question was answered. Their answers were very interesting, here are just the most common ones and the most interesting ones:
Children age 3-4:
  • Animals.
  • Forest, leaves...
  • Cows.
  • Sea.
  • I don't know.
  • Pond.

Children age 4-5:

  • Sunshine, I like sunshine.
  • Flowers that smell good.
  • A kite in the sky.
  • White clouds.
  • When everything is nice and clean, when people take their trash out.
  • I like the sky.

Children 5-6:

  • Nature are animals, spiders, trees, ants, flowers.
  • I don't like when the nature is filthy.
  • Nature is everything that we can produce on the farm.
  • We can feel the nature.
  • Nature is air.
  • Nature is everything around us.
  • Nature is science.
  • Our heart is also nature.
  • Nature is when we are alive.
  • Mountains and land.
